Back in Alignment: How to Rewind a Garage Door Cable After it Slips
Your garage door goes up, and instead of rising smoothly, one side lifts while the other drags. Or maybe it just stopped moving altogether and you noticed a coil of cable sitting loose on the drum. A slipped or rewound garage door cable is one of those problems that looks minor at first glance but can quickly make your door dangerous to use.
Understanding how the cables work and what rewinding them actually involves helps you make a smarter call: handle it yourself or hand it off to someone trained for it.
What Garage Door Cables Actually Do
Your garage door hangs in a careful balance. On each side, a cable runs from the bottom of the door, wraps around a drum near the top of the track, and connects to the tension stored in your springs. When the door moves, the drum winds or unwinds the cable in a controlled path.
When a cable slips off the drum, that balance disappears. The door may go crooked, jam against the tracks, or refuse to move at all. In some cases, the door will crash down if you try to force it.
What “Rewinding a Garage Door Cable” Really Means
Rewinding a cable means repositioning it back onto the grooves of the drum in the correct pattern and retensioning it so both sides of the door lift evenly. It sounds straightforward, but the process requires working around garage door springs, which store a significant amount of energy.
Torsion springs, the horizontal springs mounted above the door, are under hundreds of pounds of tension even when the door is closed. If you disturb them without the right tools or technique, the spring can release suddenly, causing serious injury.
Extension spring systems (the springs that run parallel to the horizontal tracks on each side) are somewhat more forgiving but still need careful handling. The International Door Association consistently recommends that spring-related repairs, including cable rewinds that require detensioning, be handled by trained professionals.
When a Homeowner Can Safely Help
There is a narrow scenario where a careful homeowner can get involved: if the cable has simply slipped off the drum while the door was in the fully open position, and the spring system is still under proper tension, you may be able to guide the cable back into the groove without adjusting spring tension. This applies mainly to extension spring systems on lighter doors.
Even then, the steps involve:
- Disconnect the opener: Unplug the motor unit or pull the emergency release cord so the door is manually operated.
- Secure the door open: Use locking pliers or a C-clamp on the track below the bottom roller to prevent the door from moving while you work.
- Guide the cable back onto the drum: Starting at the bottom anchor point, trace the cable back along the track and seat it into the drum groove, making sure it lies flat.
- Check both sides: Confirm the cable on the opposite side is properly seated and equally tensioned before testing the door.
- Test slowly by hand: Release the door clamp and lower it manually a few inches to check for smooth, even movement.
If anything feels off, such as uneven tension, a grinding noise, or the door pulling to one side, give a professional a call.
The Safer Choice
If your cable slipped because a spring broke, the drum cracked, or the cable itself is frayed, this is not a DIY job. Trying to rewind a cable while working around a broken or weakened spring puts you at real risk.
