How to Replace a LiftMaster or Linear Battery Backup
A battery backup keeps your garage door opener working when the power goes out. When the battery wears out, most openers start to beep or show a warning light, and the opener stops running during outages. Replacing the battery takes about 10 to 15 minutes with a screwdriver and a stepladder. Here is how to do it on LiftMaster and Linear openers.
Signs Your Opener Needs a New Backup Battery
- The opener beeps or chirps every few seconds, even when the power is on.
- The battery status light on the opener or wall control is flashing or has changed color. Your owner’s manual lists what each light pattern means for your model.
- The door will not open or close during a power outage.
- The battery is several years old. Backup batteries lose capacity over time, even if the opener rarely runs on battery power.
What You Need
- A replacement battery made for your opener. Many LiftMaster battery backup openers use the 485LM 12-volt battery, and Linear openers use their own model-specific battery. Check the label on the old battery or your owner’s manual before you buy.
- A Phillips screwdriver.
- A sturdy stepladder.
How to Replace the Battery Backup
- Unplug the opener. Disconnect the opener from the ceiling outlet before you open any covers.
- Open the battery compartment. On most LiftMaster models the battery sits behind the light lens or a cover on the end panel of the motor unit. Remove the cover screw if there is one.
- Remove the old battery. Slide the battery out far enough to reach the wires. Disconnect the black (negative) wire first, then the red (positive) wire.
- Connect the new battery. Attach the red wire to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal. Slide the battery into place and refit the cover.
- Plug the opener back in. The new battery needs time to charge, often up to 24 hours. A warning light may stay on while it charges.
- Test it. Once the battery has charged, unplug the opener and run the door. It should open and close on battery power alone.
Recycle the Old Battery
Opener backup batteries are sealed lead-acid batteries, so they should not go in household trash. Most battery retailers and local recycling centers accept them.
When to Call a Professional
If the warning light or beeping continues after the new battery has fully charged, or the opener still will not run on battery power, the problem is likely in the opener itself. The same goes for openers that are more than 10 to 15 years old. Our technicians handle garage door opener repair across Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky, and we install new LiftMaster and Linear openers with built-in battery backup. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a garage door opener backup battery last?
Most backup batteries last about one to three years. Heat, cold, and frequent power outages can shorten that, so replace the battery as soon as the opener warns you it is low.
Why does my garage door opener keep beeping?
On openers with a battery backup, regular beeping usually means the battery is low or the opener is running on battery power because the outlet has lost power. Check that the opener is plugged in and the outlet works. If it is, the battery likely needs replacing.
Can I use any 12-volt battery?
No. Use the replacement battery specified for your opener model. A battery that is not designed for your opener may not fit, charge correctly, or power the door during an outage.
Do LiftMaster and Linear openers use the same battery?
Not always. Each brand uses batteries made for its own openers, and models within a brand can differ. Match the part number on your old battery, or ask our team and we will confirm the right one.
